Re-taken Photographs

When I retook the photographs I decided to base it on a photograph that I liked, therefore I found a photograph from Google and took inpiration from it. Therefore, I photographed my model's face, half her body and full shots using close-ups, mid-shots and long shots. This also captured her hair, make-up, jewellery and clothing.

I did all of the models make up and hair myself. We used a wide range of techniques to make sure the right look was created.

As I adapted my make-up in order to make it look similar to the photograph I liked.

I photographed close ups and full body shots to add a feeling of variety and change, so all the photographs were not predictable or boring.

I also tried a landscape effect.

We used this pose often, as I have seen in any many Rock photographs and magazines throughout my research, therefore I tried to re-create it in my own way.

We made the word 'Love' visible on her outfit, because this is quite an important aspect of her outfit.
We also re-created hand poses that are linked with Rock music, therefore we tested these out, and I made her lean forward for more effect.
We tried a range of facial expressions but holding the same pose, to see what effect this would have on the photographs and whether it would produce connotations of Rock.

In these photographs, I was testing the images and making sure there if I was to use these photographs there would be space of all of the conventions of the magazine.

After taking a variety of shots of her just standing, I decided to make her lean on the wall, for a different type of effect, to connote her rebellion.

Feedback and Planning

Feedback

As a result of my feedback, I have learnt that within the Planning element of the task I will need to improve my work on shot lists, layouts, drafting, scripting and storyboarding in order to achieve an excellent level in the grading.

Within the construction element, I need to retake some images therefore I can complete a variety of shots and use Photoshop in order to manipulate them as appropriate to the context, including cropping and re-sizing, as I really need to improve this.

Planning

From Thursday 16th January until the 14th of February, I have two sessions a week as well as my own free time, to develop my front cover, contents page, and double page spread. Therefore, within this time period I will have to retake my images and reconstruct my front cover in order to achieve an excellent grade, by improving things such as lighting, setting and objects used. I will also have to take more appropriate photographs when considering my contents page and double page spread too.

For the duration of this week and possibly the week beginning January 20th, I would like to begin research into contents page and double page spreads as well as retaking my photographs. I would like this element to be completed by that time.

I will begin to manipulate my newly taken photographs within the week of January 20th-27th, whilst continuing to analyse current contents page and double page spreads.

Afterwards, I will have to research contents page and double page spread, in order to analyse them and find inspiration in the ones I like. I will have to find examples and selection current ones in which I like.
I will then have to complete drafts, possibly using the computer with programmes such as Photoshop.
I will complete around three drafts for the contents page and double page spread, in order to achieve a range of ideas to choose from. When creating the contents page and double page spread I will have to:

  • Manipulate the images
  • Select the appropriate images to feature on the contents page and double page spread
  • Make the images stand out [using bright colours, cropping/resizing, Photoshop tools]
  • Make sure that conventional elements of the pages are used [for example, on the contents page using page numbers and photographs, on the double page spread having an interview/a lot of text

From the 14th of February to the 11th of April, I will have to allocate time to complete my evaluation and develop it to a good standard during this time period, as it is worth 20% of the grade.

Annotation of Contents Page and Double Page Spreads

I created mood boards of contents pages and double page spreads, adding additional information and conventions to them. I also annotated particular contents pages and double page spreads, I labelled the conventions and things which stand out, such as images, language techniques and the layout. I also highlighted headers which stood out and the colour schemes which are conventionally used.

Front Cover Designs

 Front Cover Designs

I have tried doing various different front covers, using different images that I have taken to experiment and see which one looks the best and more effective. I experimented with different colour schemes to see which one suited the theme of Rock music the best and which one fitted the genre the most. I used different edits on the photograph to make the model look different, to see which magazine front cover is the best for use.

Photographs

Before and After (Hair and Makeup)

I took a close up shot before I did her hair and make-up then took another one afterwards, in order to identify the comparison. It took many attempts to get the make-up to look realistic and effective, and to the right standard for the front cover of a Rock music magazine.

 Photographs

I took variety of photograph of my chosen  model doing different poses and taking different camera shots. I placed her in front of a brick wall, therefore I could photograph her with space for text when adding it and it an idea which features on various other Rock magazines. I dressed her in a black and white dress and black shows are these are the stereotypical colours for rock. I also chose somebody with dark hair as this is what most Rock stars have. I completed the scary make-up in which I had previously planned and did her hair similar to way I had been looking at during the research stage. Some of the photographs are of low quality, therefore I will have to improve them on Photoshop. I will select the best and most suitable photographs for editing and use. I have also included photographs from when I was doing her make-up and what techniques I used.
